The ripple effect that will ‘elevate’ you

Positive Psychology will show you how you can live ‘your best life’. A good place to start is to increase your experience of positive emotions. The Dalai Lama says “If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy. practice compassion“.

This video (although it is an advert) shows how acts of kindness and compassion can cause a ripple effect of happiness and positive emotions. The interesting thing is that you may also be ‘infected’ and feel moved simply by being an observer and watching it,  even though I’ve told you that this is an advert and the people are acting!

Johnathan Haidt describes this phenomenon as ‘elevation’ – “Elevation is elicited by acts of virtue or moral beauty; it causes warm, open feelings in the chest; and it motivates people to behave more virtuously themselves.”  These moments of elevation can be experienced first or second hand and I suspect that you will be able to think of times when you’ve felt moved in this way.

So, any time we do a kind or compassionate act we can cause a ripple effect that  may affect far more people than we might ever have imagined.
